- No one knows exactly how April Fools' Day started. One popular theory ties it to France's switch to the Gregorian calendar in 1582, when people who still marked the new year in spring were teased as fools.
- In France, children try to stick a paper fish on someone's back and call out "Poisson d'avril!" (April fish).
- In 1957 a British TV news program aired a straight-faced report on Swiss farmers harvesting spaghetti from trees, one of the most famous April Fools' hoaxes ever.
