About this memorial day word search

  • Memorial Day began as Decoration Day after the Civil War. In 1868 General John A. Logan called for decorating the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers on May 30.
  • Since 1971 it has been observed on the last Monday in May, and the National Moment of Remembrance asks Americans to pause at 3 p.m. local time.
  • The red poppy became a symbol of remembrance through John McCrae's World War I poem "In Flanders Fields."
  • Memorial Day honors service members who died in military service, while Veterans Day in November thanks everyone who served, a useful distinction to talk through with students.
