Built so your words don't go missing

Every word placed

The grid sizes itself until all your words fit. If one can’t (no shared letters), it says which, instead of quietly dropping it.

Real crossword rules

Words only touch where they cross, so there are no stray letter runs, and squares are numbered the usual way.

Clues or fill-in

Add "word = clue" for Across and Down clues, or leave clues off for a fill-in puzzle solved from the word bank.

Phrases

Multi-word answers like "apple cider" print with their word lengths, (5,5), the way newspaper crosswords do.

Answer key

The filled-in grid prints on its own page after the puzzle.

Large print

Bigger clues and squares for seniors and young solvers.

Same words, more activities: a word search, a word scramble or bingo cards.

Frequently asked questions

›Is the crossword maker free?

Yes. Make, print and download crosswords with answer keys for free, with no account needed.

›How do I make a crossword puzzle?

Type each word and its clue on its own line, like "acorn = Nut from an oak tree". The grid is built as you type. Press New layout for a different arrangement, then Print or Download PDF.

›Why didn’t one of my words fit?

Every word has to cross another one by sharing a letter. A word with no letters in common with the rest (or one longer than a fixed grid size) can’t be placed, and the maker names it. Add a word that shares its letters, set the grid size to Auto, or press New layout.

›Can I make a crossword without clues?

Yes. Leave the clues off and it prints as a fill-in (criss-cross) puzzle: solvers fit the words from the word bank into the grid by length and crossing letters.

›How many words can I use?

Up to 40. About 10–20 words makes a one-page puzzle that’s comfortable to solve; with more, the clues continue on a second page.

›Can I share my crossword?

Yes. "Copy share link" makes a link that rebuilds the exact same grid and clues, so a class or family can print the same puzzle.
