How to play Memorial Day bingo
- Give each player a card and something to mark squares with.
- The caller reads words from the caller's list in any order, ticking each one off.
- Players mark a word when it's called. The middle square is free.
- The first to complete a row, column or diagonal shouts "Bingo!" and the caller checks the card.
Print 2 cards to a page to save paper, cut them apart, and use candy, cereal or buttons as markers. The caller’s list on the last page makes calling easy.
Good to know
- Memorial Day began as Decoration Day after the Civil War. In 1868 General John A. Logan called for decorating the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers on May 30.
- Since 1971 it has been observed on the last Monday in May, and the National Moment of Remembrance asks Americans to pause at 3 p.m. local time.
- The red poppy became a symbol of remembrance through John McCrae's World War I poem "In Flanders Fields."
- Memorial Day honors service members who died in military service, while Veterans Day in November thanks everyone who served, a useful distinction to talk through with students.
