How to play sight words bingo

  1. Give each player a card and something to mark squares with.
  2. The caller reads words from the caller's list in any order, ticking each one off.
  3. Players mark a word when it's called. The middle square is free.
  4. The first to complete a row, column or diagonal shouts "Bingo!" and the caller checks the card.

Call a word, have students find it and read it aloud before they mark it. For extra practice, give a definition or use the word in a sentence instead of saying it.

Good to know

  • Edward Dolch published his list of 220 service words in the 1930s and 1940s, and many classrooms still use it today.
  • The Fry list of 1,000 instant words is ordered by frequency; the first 100 make up roughly half of the words in typical written English.
